In western Mozambique’s Sussundenga District, the Chimanimani Landscape Restoration Project is addressing critical ecological degradation in a region that has lost 29% of its tree cover since 2000. This ambitious 15+ year initiative encompasses 206,000 hectares, including 170,000 hectares of the Chimanimani National Park’s Buffer Zone—a globally significant biodiversity hotspot home to 78 endemic plant species.

Through a comprehensive approach, Eden: People+Planet is facilitating the restoration of 95,000 hectares, protecting 60,000 hectares of healthy forest, and working with more than 1,000 farmers to adopt regenerative agricultural practices. The project addresses drivers of deforestation through strategic interventions that balance ecological needs with community development.

The project has already made significant progress in 2024, bringing 1,267+ hectares under restoration, planting 863,429 indigenous trees representing 71 different species, establishing 5 community nurseries, and employing 349 community members. This work represents Eden’s strategic evolution from basic tree planting to comprehensive landscape restoration focused on both ecological health and community wellbeing.
